About South Plains Leatherfest
South Plains Leatherfest-International Master/slave Weekend began over 10 years ago as an event where experienced members of the community could find something different from the “SM 101” classes that filled the schedules of most other events and clubs. Since that time, we have expanded our mission, so now at South Plains you’ll not only find cutting edge, advanced classes on SM technique, but also specifically “queer friendly” space and a home for the Master/slave community.
What you won’t find at South Plains is a lot of political correctness. We embrace the raw edges of Leather and the “edgeliving” of M/s relationships. We support separate space and time for the whole community to gather. We remember our past and celebrate our future.
We are South Plains Leatherfest – come join us!

AARP BDSM
Have you begun to notice the dungeon is getting grey? The median age is rising? Most safety classes assume we're in our late twenties. THIS one doesn't.
Practical advice for us baby boomers...the top ten ways you know you MIGHT be too old:
1.Sensory deprivation is when your Dom hides your hearing aid batteries.
2.Your nipple clamps have training wheels.
3.Edge play is standing by the microwave with a pacemaker.
4. You have to specify "walking" or "beating" cane.
5.You can't tell the difference between your tattoos and your age spots.
6.You shout "One, two, three, CLEAR!" for electrical play.
7. Breath play is when your wheelchair runs over your oxygen hose.
8. Suspension is an UltraLift™ bra.
9. You hold the paddle and say, "You're younger than me....back into the paddle....HARD!"
And the Number One way to tell you might be too old for BDSM: 1. Age play really is 24/7.

Phoenix will discuss the technical aspects of intricate decorative cutting such as: where to find and create detailed designs, what are the considerations needed when choosing a design, what are the transfer materials and equipment needed and where do you obtain them, what are issues about where the design is placed on the body, how do you “shade” areas to create a complex design, what types of handles and blades are used and where do you obtain them, what are the cross contamination and blood borne pathogen prevention techniques, and what are the tricks of the trade to do intricate cutting. There will be a review of safety requirements for general cutting/blood play.

We'll cover the basics of bootblacking, starting with products and techniques and delve into the mindset of different dynamics and how to incorporate them into power based relationships. This presentation will include a demo including aspects of service, skill, power exchange, and sexual expression.

Choke Outs
Erotic and sensual, there are not many other forms of BDSM edge play that will lead to the release of endorphins as quickly as breath play. Scientifically proven that a body in an aerobic state will retain endorphins longer, breath play is touted by many to be one of the best "spaces" or "highs" to be found. Just as emphatically touted as a great high, it is scorned by others as dangerous and off limits due to the numerous potential life threatening hazards. RACK players will appreciate this course which provides the information and skills they need to safely continue on their journeys of discovery.

Different Strokes for Different Folks: Personality Types and Communication
Different strokes for different folks - nowhere is that saying more true than for people involved in alternative sexuality communities. But what is it that makes us enjoy those different strokes? Is it possible to develop a better understanding of ourselves and our desires through traditional psychological assessment? In this workshop, participants have the chance to take a personality test based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), then learn about different elements of personality and how to improve communication with others - and we all know that better communication makes for better relationships and better play! **Note** Prior to attending this workshop, please pick up and complete a personality sorter at the registration desk. It will take approximately ten minutes to complete.

Face Play: Where Vice meets Vanity
Face Play enters an intriguing "taboo" area by engaging SM techniques above the collarbone. The edge of having an area of the body that is normally highly protected and rarely left vulnerable is a remarkable adrenalin rush. Entering the realm of R.A.C.K., this class includes facial percussion – open and closed hands, caning, flogging, piercing, pressure points and flirts with singletails on the tongue and knives piercing pretty cheeks. Hammers and meat tenderizers make cameo appearances as well. This is a play style that lends itself well to the limited budget -- and those with limited space as an intense Face Play scene can be created almost instantly with small tools and imaginative techniques. This is a relatively advanced topic in many cases, and might be considered a form of edge play. This is a safe and welcoming environment for those that wish to learn and explore the possibility of playing on this fringe of adrenalin.

Masterful Mindfucking: A Cookbook & Sampler of Depravity in Action
Mindfucks are a delicious addition to your toybag! However, many people often short-change mindfucking to a single “trick” in a certain scene. This seminar/discussion means to turn your mindfuckery into a dynamic, constant frame of mind; a sadistic lifetime religion if you will! We’ll look at how to detect a bottom’s weaknesses, how to concoct a “sting” on-the-fly, then how to ride that wave of terror with extensions of your original plan as you play off their reactions. From simple to complex, I’ll include examples of elaborate mindfucks involving months of planning, abandoned warehouses… and off-duty cops. When you leave this class you’ll have the knowledge to become a world class terror!

Putting the boots to them
Kicking, trampling, and using your boots in a scene can be wonderfully intense, on the verge of hot and violent or as intimate, quiet and connected as you’d like it to be. Start a scene in close quarters, run an entire scene with no toybag, body surf a willing bottom or kick back and feel a tongue through the leather. Layer it with toys and generate sensory overload. Create a devotional mindset or rip into a round of degradation. You’re invited to lace ‘em up, pull ‘em on, and join in for some interactive fun.

Beyond the Basics: Exploring the Challenges of an Established M/s Relationship (3-hour class)
You've gone to the classes and read all the books about how to begin a Master/slave relationship. You've created your relationship and lived in it. But now that you've got an understanding of the basics of M/s, where do you go to talk about the special issues and challenges that face those who have lived as Master and slave for some time?
In "Beyond the Basics," Master Jim and slave marsha create the class they've always wanted to attend -- one in which experienced Masters and slaves can openly address the issues around sustaining an established M/s relationship. The class format is interactive and will be as unique as the Masters and slaves in it --rather than a lecture, attendees will select and discuss three or four challenges to established M/s relationships that meet their needs. In this "safe space," experienced Masters and slaves alike can give and receive feedback, advice and assistance. Through the class, Master Jim and slave marsha also will challenge those of us who have walked the path of M/s for some time to begin to network and support each other as much as we do those just beginning their M/s journey. If you no longer get what you need from introductory classes on M/s, this is the class for you!

Boy, Didn’t You Hear What I Thought I Said? The Importance of Functional Communication in D/s Relationships
Although everyone wants to feel loved and accepted, a lack of healthy communication skills often undermines one’s chances for a happy and successful relationship. And that’s especially true for those of U/us whose sexual identity is rooted in BDSM. Because the consensual imbalance of authority in D/s affords ample opportunity for projection and power struggles, we sometimes have difficulty achieving and sustaining healthy, long-term D/s relationships. But this same dynamic can also provide us with a tremendous opportunity to identify and, ultimately, heal a myriad of unresolved issues from our past, thereby paving the way for an enduring, mutually satisfying relationship. And sound, functional communication between all of the parties in the relationship holds the key.
Join slave Rick, a licensed psychotherapist (www.KinkTherapistLosAngeles.com), as he draws upon experiences from both his practice and his 10+ year relationship with his Master to assist Y/you in navigating the sometimes treacherous waters of these most unconventional of relationships.

Building the Team: Non-Adversarial M/s
It seems like so many written models of M/s feature the angry master continually punishing the disobedient slave, while the flow of information is deliberately choked off. This workshop is for people who aren’t interested in a power dynamic that’s one long series of takedowns, but becomes a smoothly-running system where both parties work together to achieve goals … and the s-types are encouraged to be honorable adults responsible for keeping their promises. We’ll concentrate on seeing the power dynamic as a Team rather than as adversaries, and discuss methods of useful conflict resolution that reinforce the power dynamic rather than putting it aside.

Emotional Intelligence: Developing Emotional Responsibility in M/s Relationship (joint presentation with Master Fire)

Participants are invited to actively participate in this discussion-based class.

Finishing Touches: Creating Fulfillment When Your M/s Relationship is Not Enough
When it comes to relationships, each of us has specific physical, emotional and spiritual needs. It’s widely understood that someone in a more conventional relationship will likely be incapable of meeting the totality of their partner’s needs, and one can only guess as to how much more that applies to those who engage in esoteric relationships rooted in consensual dominance and submission. What do you do if your Master/slave relationship doesn’t satisfy all of your needs? How can adjustments and accommodations be made without damaging the relationship or threatening the individuals who comprise it? Who initiates the changes, and who does the adjusting and accommodating? In what promises to be a highly charged discussion, Master Skip and slave Rick will candidly share examples from their own 12-year relationship as they examine this sensitive subject. Come discover how acknowledging what’s missing in your life need not pose a threat to your M/s relationship, and why restructuring the relationship so that your needs or the needs of your Master or slave can be fully or better met has the potential to strengthen the D/s dynamic between you.

Leather Traditions, Military Protocol and Victorian Sensibilities
Many of our leather traditions and certain Master/slave protocols come from the military and service relationships dating back to the Victorian era. In this class we will talk about the connections among military protocol, leather traditions and etiquette according to Emily Post. You will learn a little history of military protocols, Victorian customs and leather traditions, including some of the reasons for certain traditions so you can decide which, if any, you wish to incorporate into your leather and/or M/s lifestyle. We will also discuss the function of rank and hierarchy both in the military and in Victorian households, and how these can enhance our relationships.

Loneliness In The Master/Slave Dynamic (joint presentation with slave patrick)
We don't like to talk about it, but it happens. You know your job as slave. He more than meets his obligations as your Master. Then why do you feel so on your own? Why does he feel no one understands him? Neither of you can point at any reason to complain, but if you're honest, what you feel most strongly is neglected.
We'll take a fearless look at the causes of our loneliness together, at what actions we take to address it, and whether the tools of M/s -- ritual, protocol, community support, even play -- can be called upon to prevent it.

Protocols and Rituals in M/s D/s
This is not the typical “Protocols” class; this is how to make your M/s relationship into true 24/7 by finding the heart of the M/s relationship, and building its foundation in bedrock.
This class will discuss the specifics of Protocols and Rituals; from developing a manual and devising key phrasing that is tailored to the dynamics of the varieties of M/s relationships, to putting these standards into place, to overcoming self-consciousness –and discovering the “flip” moment when the protocol becomes second nature, to contracts and reviewing of protocols, to enhancing them and ensuring they do not become either stale or routine. We will also cover how these protocols can be done while surrounded by the vanilla world, including underage children (without them being aware), and how protocols can put the “train back on the tracks” when the pressures of the outside world becomes a distraction.

Reactance – What it is, and how to Work Through it
Rebellion!
Or is it?
Perceived loss of freedom – from both the Master and slave perspective – can result in reactance.
Processing reactance and recognizing it is one of the most difficult and misunderstood elements of authority exchange relationships. It can often be the cause of the dissolution of a relationship and each party is completely unaware of it.
In this presentation we look into reactance and help others to recognize it as well. We help illustrate the nature of reactance is, and what it says about who we are. We examine if it is rare, or to be expected? And even if it is expected, is it something that we can avoid, or at least manage? This presentation requires all of us to look hard at ourselves, and ask ourselves how dedicated to our M/s relationships we are willing to be.

The Transparent Master: From Projection to Reflection
Because, as the Talmud teaches, “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are,” relationships of all types are often rife with projection. If such projection goes unrecognized and unaddressed, then alienation, isolation and, ultimately, dissolution of the relationship is the result. In the case of an M/s relationship, the slave projects his or her ideas, feelings and attitudes regarding authority figures onto the Master, and if that projection includes anger, fear, blame or guilt, the toll it takes on both the relationship and the Master’s self-esteem can be tremendous. In this enlightening presentation, Master Skip will explore the underlying psycho-spiritual dynamics that make it possible for a Master to stand in the middle of a slave’s projection without moving, neither accepting the projection nor rejecting it and, in doing so, facilitate the slave’s awareness of the projection, the Master’s strengthened sense of competency and the realization of the true nature of the relationship for them both.

The Yin/Yang and the Tree: Models of Spiritual M/s
More and more people are discovering that power dynamics can be a spiritual discipline and even a spiritual path … but our “spiritual M/s” doesn’t always look the same. This class will discuss different ways to structure a spiritual power dynamic that’s custom-built for the people involved. We’ll cover styles from the couple-focused “yin/yang” model to the outward-focused “tree” model to the disciple’s path of guru bhakti to the plight of the spiritual submissive whose dominant thinks its all silliness. We’ll also discuss how to bring the concept of healthy power dynamics to progressive spirituality, not just the other way around.

We’re in an M/s Relationship – I Don’t Like You Today – Now What?
Once a Master/slave relationship is in place, the next step is to maintain and nurture it on an ongoing basis. But not every day is going to be a good day; life’s impacts, stresses, obligations to work and family, and many other challenges can raise negative emotional dynamics that can result in expressions of anger or resentment. “Now What?” addresses ways to deal with those moments where our intentions, goals, weaknesses, egos, emotions and baggage can get in the way of our relationships; where they get the better of us, and place the M/s dynamic to a severe test.
We will discuss and explore what the warning signs are for emotional responses, how to communicate through them, tricks on maintaining internal control, staying true to one’s authentic self, finding forgiveness, channeling resentment, and learning to see the signs in each other to minimize hitting triggers either accidentally – or on purpose.
